Gas Station to Mountain House
August 6th, Day 56:
I woke up to the prods of the gas station attendants who appeared at 5am to begin their day’s work and laugh at our sleeping figures. They were a bit annoying, but useful because they forced us to get an early start. We were quite hungry, so we got some interesting gas station food, which didn’t look great, but ended up tasting even worse. Eric managed to scarf some of it down, but I preferred to go empty-stomached, especially...

Karonga to gas station near Kyela, Tanzania
August 5th, Day 55:
After a couple of the wild and exhausting days, it was nice to wake up in a bed once again. It was also nice to finally get back to riding on a paved road, which had eluded us for what seemed like a forever, but was actually only a few days. Our new friend Chikondi decided to bike with us towards the border for a little while until we said our goodbyes and...

August 4th, Day 54:
The ride to Mzuzu was the least comfortable motorized vehicle experience of my life. I was feeling sick when I first got into the back of the truck, and therefore decided to take a spot on the bed of the truck rather than the side to minimize the amount of potential swaying. However, I ended up getting so crammed in that I could not move a single muscle in my body. This is not an exaggeration- I...

We awoke rather late this morning, it was around 830 and we knew today would be another grueling and mentally challenging day. We had planned on waking up around 630 or 7, but we were so exhausted from the previous day that we both slept through the multiple alarms we had set. We quickly took down our tent and strapped everything to the backs of our bikes. It was nice to have visibility back, but...

August 2nd, Day 52:
If time were no object I would have loved to stay in Nkhata Bay for another week, just to relax, soak up the sun, and swim. However, we did not have this luxury, and it was with a heavy heart that I biked away from the closest thing to paradise that we had seen since departing from Cape Town. But the day was going to be very interesting, and I quickly got excited for what lay in store.

However, when I woke up this morning and walked outside, it was right in front of me in all its glory and beauty. It should really be a huge travel destination in Africa; the problem is most people...

Lilongwe to Nkhata Bay:

Lilongwe had been a less efficient visit than we had hoped for, and being several days behind schedule, we decided that we would try to push for Nkhata Bay. Nkhata had been the place I had been looking forward to all trip; known as the quintessential Lake Malawi beach town. I was very excited to finally see the lake, so it was not particularly difficult to get up early and head off down the road.
